Cathey Pabst

General Background

“I was born in Roswell, New Mexico, where I was exposed to the works of such artists as Peter Hurd, Henrietta Wyeth, and Bill Wiggins. I studied art in college but didn’t start developing my career in fine arts until 1991. My focus has been working with gourds, pastels, fiber arts and collage. I am a collector of ‘treasures’ that I incorporate into my art.”

About the Art

Cathey’s collage work began with her lifelong love affair with paper. She made doll clothes from the Sunday comics, a paper dress she even wore, jewelry from theater tickets, and a bust of a friend from paper triangular boxes she made. “I love folding it, bending it, painting it, and making things that give people a reason to smile or laugh.” Collage is the perfect medium for her.

Cathey is a member of the National Collage Society and was juried into their 2008 national show. She also a member of the Rocky Mountain Collage Society, taking Third Place in their 2008 Show and honorable mention in 2010.  She was recently selected as Artist of the

Month at the Art Martters Gallery and Studio, Salida, Colorado, 2011.  Her image, "Boy in a White Shirt", was chosen for the National Collage Society's 2011 Annual Show and  their 2012 Calendar.   Recently, her piece, "How Do You Get to Wonderland", was purchased by the Grand Junction Commission on Arts and Culture as the annual business award for the city's Champion of the Arts Award.

“I enjoy the process of collage – the breaking down of images into basic forms and then building them back up in a different way. What would make this more interesting or more unusual?  The materials almost seem to talk to each other and, then, come together to tell their story.   It seems like play instead of work."
