Artist Statement
I choose to work in collage because of the endless opportunities it provides me. In this body of work, I gave myself the task of approaching it in three different ways. I often start with a background; put it away, and then come back to it. At that point sometimes an image will emerge and I work to bring it forward. Some of the paintings here were created by that process. The next method I used was a more paintingly (is that a word??) one. I blocked off squares into which I applied a texture and ink. Again, put them away and later brought them back to see if anything popped out at me. The third method was to start with a contour drawing that then I would contrast against a collaged background. This method I really enjoyed. I had forgotten how much I enjoy drawing.
